Our Mission

In 1983 the West Parry Sound District Museum was incorporated as a non-profit organization. It evolved from a group of local citizens who were concerned that the rich history of the district be preserved and interpreted for generations to come. It was also recognized that a community museum would enhance the quality of life in the area and provide a cultural resource to a wide spectrum of local residents. The commitment to the project was strengthened when it became apparent that the new Museum had potential as a significant tourist attraction. The current building opened for viewing in 1992 and serves the Town of Parry Sound and the entire West Parry Sound District. In 1999 the Museum took over operation of Tower Hill, the park in which the Museum is situated, and this space is dedicated to the exploration of natural history.

The Statement of Purpose, as recorded in the original incorporation documents, is as follows:

West Parry Sound District Museum is created to collect, conserve, research, house, exhibit and interpret those objects that best serve to illustrate the history of the West Parry Sound District. Themes will relate to human history, settlement,  industry, transportation, recreation and natural history.

The Museum will fulfill its obligation by providing special educational programs and exhibits for research and for the benefit of the present and future generations of the West Parry Sound District.

A proposed new Mission Statement and Vision Statement, pending adoption by the Board of Directors and members of the Museum, will augment this purpose.

Mission:
To create a hub of cultural activity accessible to all - our residents, our seasonal residents and our visitors - through dynamic exhibits, community involvement, interactive programs, outreach activities, and the exploration of the natural environment to enrich our community through these unique experiences.

Vision:
The Museum on Tower Hill - a hub of cultural activity providing a unique, interactive experience accessible to all, nestled in a breathtaking natural environment.

The Museum currently offers year-round exhibits to approximately 10 000 visitors annually. The permanent gallery, housed in the E. Roy Smith Room, explores the human history of the District through interactive displays. Visitors are also offered temporary exhibits throughout the year - both nationally traveling shows and those created by the Museum.
